Friendship & Cushing

These two small coastal hamlets each have about 1,000 year-round residents with a large influx of Summer residents. They share a peninsula bordered by Muscongus Bay to the south, the Medomak River to the west and the St. George River to the east. There are very few supplies available on the peninsula itself except for a few small stores in Friendship. Cushing has no town center, being entirely rural and residential. Friendship is known as one of the coast's purest lobstering villages with recreational boating still outnumbered by fishing vessels. Cushing is best known as the Summer home of Andrew Wyeth whose famous painting "Christina's World" was captured on the Olson property at Maple Juice Cove. The nearest shopping areas are about 10 miles inland at the Route 1 villages of Thomaston and Waldoboro. Medical services are equal distance north or south about 25 miles in Rockport or Damariscotta. There are virtually no lodging accomodations on the peninsula for the overnight visitor other than a few Bed & Breakfast inns.
