Rockland & Owl's Head

Rockland is almost a CITY by Maine coastal standards with a population of 9,000. In the recent past it was homeport for one of Maine's major offshore fisheries but today lobstering and recreational boating hold sway in a large protected harbor on Penobscot Bay's western shore. The downtown business district is undergoing a major transformation from mixed retail to an art museum and gallery center with the world famous Farnsworth Museum anchoring the change. Owl's Head is a picturesque fishing village of 1500 adjoining Rockland at the entrance to Penobscot Bay from the Atlantic. Restaurants, shopping and medical facilities are readily available on Route 1 nearby. Cultural organizations in addition to the Farnsworth and numerous gallerys include Maine Coast Artists, the International Film Studio, Maine Photgraphic Workshop and the Owl's Head Transportation Museum. Three golf courses are a short drive from either community and commuter plane service to Boston is available locally at Knox County Airport
