The Pemaquid peninsula (also referred to as the Bristol peninsula) is made up of several small, quaint, year-round fishing villages with populations of less than 1,000 each which swell with the influx of "Summer Folks" to closer to 2500. The peninsula is bounded by the ocean to the south, Muscongus Bay to the east and the saltwater Damariscotta River to the west. There are a few small grocery stores scattered about but most substantial provisioning invloves a car trip to Damariscotta, 15 miles inland at Route 1. In addition to a number of marinas, restaurants, small gallerys and B&B's, the area has a nine hole golf course and a comprehensive health care facility with a variety of health related services attached to it including long term care, hospice services and a woman's health center.
