Spruce Head, Tenant's Harbor & Port Clyde

The St. George peninsula is bordered by the open Atlantic to the east and south and the salt St. George River to the west. These three coastal villages are combined governmentally as "St. George" with a year-round population of 2260. All three are active lobstering centers as well as havens for Summer residents. Port Clyde is the home of a long established watercolor school offering week long courses all Summer long. Other that a single old, turn-of-the-century inn at Port Clyde and another at Tenant's Harbor, tourist lodging is limited to a few B&B's. Supplies are also limited and most shopping is done in the Route 1 towns of Thomaston or Rockland, both about 20 miles away. The nearest medical facility is Pen Bay hospital about 30 miles north. The yachtsmen and the naturalist are content in this unhurried region off the tourist track.
